The books are a trilogy, like TLOTR, but the continuation of the films depends on their financial success. 'Eragon' only grossed 72,563,183 dollars domestically, 28 million short of its production budget. However, it's done more than well enough worldwide to get its sequel. It was produced by John Davis and, as yet, there is no word on the sequel.

The books that are out currently are Eragon and Eldest, we are still waiting the 3rd book to be released, which is supposed to be the final book of the trilogy.

Yes they are based on a series of books by Christopher Paolini. There are 2 of 3 books currently released, Eragon and Eldest. We are all anxiously awaiting book 3.
