Well its not sounding too good.
When you mean dropped its oil.. (?) as in on the ground (via a hole punched in somthing?
Throwing a rod and cracking the block are both pretty terminal for that engine. A thrown rod will jamb up inside of the cylinder and generally score it beyond recovery. The engine may later run if you repair it but will always blow oil.
Grinding sounds by themselves could not be all bad. For example your flywheel might be broken and the starter jams up when it gets to the break.
BUT... with the oil comment it DOES sound terminal.
There are no alternatives (by this forum) that I can think of. You can try a mobil mechanic to come to your place and give you an opinion... that will save you a tow charge.
If it is the engine, you can drop in a used one from a wrecker or buy a crated engine from the dealer. Those are pretty much the extremes in cost. The 'remove and replace' remains the same.
good luck....

The druck dropped all its oil? You mean that it sat in one place for 10 years and you started it? That should not have been a problem. Or you mean that the oil pan had a crack in it - and you started the engine without oil?
Usually incases like this you'd take apart the engine - look inside it to see if any damage was done (lifters, blah blah). Obviously, if you arn't a mechanic then just fill the engine up with some oil - put a new oil filter on - and start up the car - see if it runs.
If you can - haul this thing to a trusted mechanic - he'd love to tear it apart and look at it for some $$$. Most engines - when they blow and break make screeching noises like metal on metal.

im not sure, but bring your fat checkbook. The way you make it sound is like all the oil fell out in like a few seconds. If its a slow leak, maybe it has nothing to do with the grinding sound. Ford starters have always been bad over the years, they can make some grinding sounds. How cold is it where you live? Colder the car, more noise it makes. My engine belts freeze and make some very loud scary sounds when I start it up, almost like its about to self destruct! Your gas lines could be frozen, that could cause your engine to stop.

Not too sure as to what the problem is with your motor with out being there to hear it for myself. But i would say that you do need either a new motor or an engine rebuild. Does your Bronco have a 302 or 351 motor??? If 302 you could possibly find a used one in good condition at a salvage yard.

When dealing with a 12 year old vehicle that has no oil, there is only one answer.
Cut your losses and scrap it.
