By definition there is no electric field in the direction of the equipotential line. If the field is resolved into its components on coordinates parallel and perpendicular to the equipotential line, then any component parallel to the to the equipotential line would violate the definition so it must be perpendicular. It is easier to understand if you draw a diagram.
