The real reason for the film to be set on Earth is so that there is viewer identification. If it were a film about a alien planet made of metal with living robots fighting a civil war, that would be intersting but hard to relate to. They put the first movie on Earth, just like the TV series, so that you can identify with everything. From their alternate forms being everyday vehicles, to seeing humans and human enviroments caught in the cross-fire.

actually it was our world in the Transformers series, at least the original series which the movie is mostly based on. Not sure what series you are talking about but most of the incarnations of the Transformers dealt with humans and earth.

I was around when the original cartoons where on T.V. They got absolutely nothing right with this movie except the title. It should have started with the war on Cybertron and how it spilled onto earth. This movie was intended to spark interest in a new generation. SORRY, but that is not going to happen. Hollywood is also in the process of destroying another classic from our childhood, J. I. Joe. They are making it into some politically correct film that involves every nation and/or possibly a spinoff of N.A.T.O.
