Because the social workers for welfare have a guideline they must adhere to regardless of the situation. People who really need the help can't get it because the guidelines are set too high. People know this so they know what to tell the social worker in order to get the benefits. The people who came up with these guidelines have no morals, and of course have never been one of us low income people.

that's a good ? for the illegals to answer since techinically they get welfare by lieing about income, housing, etc. I don't lie to get my $30 a month in food stamps...But I should get a LOT more on the little income I have... My aunt and uncle applied to food stamps.. they were told they had to sell their house they worked all their life for and then they might qualify for $40 a month..depending on how much their rent and things were.. REnt $400 food stamps $40.. so yes, the people that REALLY need it get screwed. They pull my record once a year to be sure I haven't worked or gotten an increase that I didn't tell them about... God forbid I make a $1 and not tell them... I think that IF u know the RIGHT person u can get away with anything... the illegals NEVER have to prove anything..they take their word for it.. I have NOTHING left over at the end of the month to even buy clothes, car gas, etc.. and I get enough food stamps to eat healthy for 1 week.. but I am thankful for that.. Some people WHO truly need it get nothing..

Most of them just apply for a job with the civil service without the aptitute for the particular post in question especially if it requires humanity in the welfare department because of their future's security, forget about your future. I was made into a handicap by a government hospital while seeking medical aid after a hit and run accident where i contracted MRSA and the rest is history. Until today, i am still surviving to take care of my health with $200 a month starting from March 2004. I have been through 27 operations since 1992 and still being scheduled for Recontructive surgeries to rectify their negligence. I ended up staying in a handicap home in 1999 as i was not able to work though at one time i use to earn 4 to 5 thousand a month and much more when i was in Japan. As i was wheelchair bound, my mobilty was compromised thereby compromising my ability to make a living . I went to the welfare department to apply for a 4 wheel motorbike so i could find a job to care for myself as i do not have a family to help me out during this hard time. The main condition given is that i have to be married to apply for one. How many handicap persons are married when they can't even feed themselves probably ? Then the shocker came when the women said ' jika mau, saya boleh tolong dapat satu basikal 3 roda dan you boleh jual tissue kah, boleh dapat 10 ringgit atau lebih di pasar malam atau mana mana, boleh hidup.anyone? I could have ended up losing my self esteem and dignity in the so call caring society that the government is propagating. She might as well ask me to be a beggar.

I wish I could really offer some sort of an answer for this question, I honestly don't know. I have seen in my own life. My wife (before we were married) was trying to get assistance for my son (health insurance) since I didn't make enough to get insurance through my employer and she had just lost hers. But because she is a responsible person and had managed to save up some money from her job before she was laid-off she was denied assistance.
I'm going to be following this question to see what other points of view are offered. Thanks for bring up such an important issue.

I personaly knew several families who earned much more than I ever did while raising my family...and these were getting free food, free medical and medication, free education, subsidised homes and utilities....They had rv's, boats, vacation property, several Tvs and stereos and all the other "toys"..... and because I was self emplyed and told the truth of my income and because the "government" would not allow me to deduct expences that otheres routienly did, or did not even have to report... I was denied food stamps when my family was clearly $5,000 below the guidlines and clearly eligable.... and I did not have any of the things my "honest" neighbors had and they got what ever they asked for.... I never had medical insurance and paid for all medical myself...

Seems that way, doesnt it?
I recall once when my husband and I both lost our jobs around the same time. I went for assistance, no cash but needed food stamps. After 2 months, we got approval for a whopping $98.00 a month for 5 people.
I told them where to stick thier $98.
