Sounds like they could be lines from a Table. Hover over the top left of the text and you may see a cross in a box which would indicate it is a table. This often happens if you copy text from an Internet site. You can get rid of them if you select the Table by clicking on the cross. (If you can't see the cross, try clicking within the text and see if the option to select the Table is available in the Table menu. If it is not a Table, this option will be greyed out)
If it is a Table, then from the Table menu choose 'Convert' and the choose 'Table to Text' and the lines will be gone.

Maybe you should provide a little more info...what kind of lines? solid? dashed? In the Tools menu, go to Options and hit the "View" tab and see if there is something there.

Are you talking about the lines that show up in the margin area when you have 'track changes' switched on?

Did you copy/paste from another doc (or web page)? I have had this problem and solved it by viewing the doc as a either "normal" or "web-layout". Hope this helps.

I call them "words"

You can delete them by pressing "CTRL-A" and then "DELETE"

Good luck.
