there is Medicaid and Medicare. But that said, I think that countries where they do have a national health program, it is not very good. It might be free, but the waiting and the care are not as good as in the US.
You get what you pay for, I guess you could say.

As an independent health insurance agent, I run across many people that claim they can't afford health insurance because they are poor, yet, every member of their household has a cell phone and they have cable or satellite tv. To me, that isn't poor.... I talk to people moving here from other countries and I talk to many Americans who have left the country and moved back because other health care systems are not what they are cracked up to be. Think about it, do you really want your healthcare system run like out postal system is, or any other government entity?? I get really frustrated just getting my drivers license renewed because of all the bureaucracy, I can't imagine what our health care system would be if the government got ahold of it. I personally prefer to pay for my own health care and let everyone pay for theirs.
People expect health insurance to be a freebie, but nothing else in the world is so why should health care be? Health insurance is just like any other insurance, you will have out of pocket expenses but your insurance will protect you in the case of something catastrophic. We all want health insurance to be low premiums, and low copays etc, but we all really know it doesn't cost $15 or $20 for an office visit, so who is paying the rest??? The same thing with prescriptions. Hmmm, we don't want to pay anything for premiums, and we want everything to be free or almost free, where does this money come from??? Who does pay for it?? I would much rather have the choice to spend what I want to or can afford to buy my own plan than pay a high amount in my taxes. Buy a high deductible, the premiums will be cheap and your backside will be covered if something major happens.

Hi, I'm sorry but this question makes no sense to me. Health care (medicaid) is available to poor Americans. I know this because we are landlords and have poor people as tenants. The problem is that many of them have serious health problems and are afraid to work because if they earn over a certain amount they will lose their benefits. Thus there is a disincentive for some poor people to work, and that's what keeps them poor.
The people who have the worst problems are the working poor, because health insurance is not available because of cost. many people in this situation go to emergency rooms for minor problems because they can't afford to go to a doctor in the usual way,
Best wishes, Ann McG

Socialized health care is the most hyped up disaster-waiting-to-happen confronting us. Here is one site that has documented the problems around the world caused by socialized medicine.
http://www.angelfire.com/pa/sergeman/issues/healthcare/socialized.html
There are many articles there. Take your time to read through them if you believe that free health care is really free. Our systm is less than perfect, but using countries with socialized medicine as a role model is a ticket to disaster.

Because most other countries don't give health care to every Tom, Dick, and Harry that comes to there country. America takes care of everyone else first than Americans.

Its called capitalism. You get x amount of money that you earn to spend however you want. Making the gov't pay for everyone's health care is called communism, see also Cuba. Where a 1951 Chevy is the newest car you can find. How's that working out for ya, Castro?

Beacuse in America, you take care of yourself. This is not a socialist government, nor is it a democracy. The country was set up as a representative republic for individuals to work hard and take care of themselves. You do not have a right to health care because you can find a doctor and work with him or her individually for your needs. It is not the goverment's responsibility to ensure your health, nor it is your employer's responsibility. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

I think the real question should be 'Why do we let government regulation and trial lawyers make health care unaffordable?'
Socialized medicine will not work.
