Why are those same people adament that winter doesn't really start until Dec 21, just because the calendar says so? Even folks who have a foot or more of snow outside.

December 21 is actually the Winter Solstice. It has to do with the position of the earth and the sun and the tilt on the axis. It is also the day with the least amount of sunlight (at least in the northern hemisphere). The same basic reason why June 21 (or 22) is the first day of summer

winter is a season. seasons have cycles. christmas is a holiday. the only connection is that christmas occurs during the winter season.

because the Christmas season is the Christmas season and winter is winter

And on more than one occasion we have had snow in June, does that mean that June should be considered winter also?
