"My car caught on fire and my homework burned."
"I was kidnapped and my captors use my homework as proof of life, it is police evidence now, can't get it back."

How about telling your teacher you were on your way to school reading over your homework to make sure you got the answers correct and a big gust of wind blew the sheet out of your hand, you chased it but it blew into a river, lake etc.. any body of water will do.

Just be honest, let your teacher know you lost the sheet of homework, and that you would be more than willing to do the work and turn it in if the teacher were to give you another one.

Hmm most teachers are liberals, so if you cook up some some load of crap and present the claim like you mean it (you can't laugh) you'll be fine...try this one:
I was walking home from school and there was this homeless guy that was cursing Bush and he wanted to know the contact information of how to get in touch with Cindy Sheehan -- a passerby knew but didn't have any paper, so you sacrificed your assignment so that the information could be recorded and thus help save America.

Just take the blank sheet of paper and present it to you teacher and proudly say, Here IS my homework....If she questions you that it is blank then confidently reply.." Oh no Sir/Madam, I wrote the work using invisible ink.. if you light the the paper up by fire, then the writing wil become visible.!

If it's due today, tell the teacher that you left it in your Mom's car when she dropped you off at school. She won't be home for a few days cuz she went out of town on biz...so you'll have to turn the paper in late.

My mom was doing a random check in my room and she accidentally vacuumed it. When we tried to get it out the dog started to bark because he had "stomach problems" and he sat on all the trash we took out of the vacuum. I quickly jumped to get him off but was too late. My mom, feeling awful, decided to wash the paper, it worked and when we hung it out to dry the wind blew very hard, as I chased the paper down the street I was able to catch it and then I got hit by a car and the paper flew out of my hand.........

You could say you lost it cuz of a drive-by. That really happened to me once, and that got so much attention that homework was forgotten. But it really happened so you'll have to be a good liar!

"My dog ate it" haha (oh dear....)
Honestly though, try and see the teacher before the lesson and tell them. At least they can't then play the "you should have come before the lesson to tell me" card, while if you come up with some dodgy lie, it's obvious that you're lying.
Honesty is the best policy (excuse the cliché)
