Becuase hip hop went from being an art form to a bunch of overly commercialized crap.
which is kind of ironic considering that nas applies to that.

Because it is. Hip Hop sucks. Here's the formula. Dances, sex, and beef. You gotta remember when Nas first hit the scene it was about the dopest lyrics. Not how low can you go or who can shake there *** the best. I'm from that same genre and I feel the same way Hip Hop is dead and money killed her. Once Hip Hop became all about money and who got the most it lost the love factor.

because it is. That is why he signed up with jay z a rapper he once denounced as a sell out. his philosophy now is that the art is dead so one might as well just make a profit off of it (see his Hot 97 interview) . He is saying he held out for long enough. Even when he was doing music videos with Puff daddy his lyrics never became entirely superficial (and actually they still aren't) . Few rappers had remained as consistently noncommercial as Nas which is precisely why people make a big deal out of his short flirtation with commercialism years ago. Jay z gave away his entire life to commercialism right after his first classic album as did many modern rappers. Nas does state that he holds out the hope that a saviour will come and revitalize rap one day but he says he dosen't see that happening now. As for those that think that Southern rap is really replacing other types think about this. No fans outside of the south are actually passionate and admiring of the ACTUAL ARTISTS in southern music. They just like to listen to the songs; they think their fun to dance to, but no one outside of the south is actually passionate about the artists themselves. Ofcourse the rest of music isn't looking too much better either. i mean look at modern rock music lol.

I agree with Mady. Hip hop is all about half naked chicks and talking about girls and crap that is just disgusting. It amazes me that people like it, people need brain transplants I'm telling you. Like who wants to listen to a song about a stripper or something stupid like that!??!!? Not me!!!!
