The English got the Ottoman Empire in 1917 during WWI. The Ottomans had managed to hold together what today is the Arabian peninsula, up through Palestine, and ot to the current Turkish border. East to Afghanistan and a huge chunk of Africa for six hundred years. The Brits had it until WWII and managed to set up nations across tribal and religious lines to prevent unity and keep the people of their respective countries fighting each other instead of the Brits. The introduced advanced technology that was turned to warfare. They stirred up resentment and hate and then just walked away from the whole mess. They also left the Government procedures in place in India in 1947 and the poor Indians are still trying to make it work. The Chinese aren't crazy about the occupation and opium in the 19th century or having to wait for Hong Kong in the 20th century. Remember the tune, "Hail Britannia, Britannia rules the waves"? They were referring to the waving fists of colonials the the Brits pulled out.
