Why is it that so many ppl have a problem with people on welfare? Most of the women and men on welfare are required to work in order to keep there benefits unless they have a very young infant and then one in the house is allowed to stay with the baby for a short period of time. Having been in the so called welfare system when i was younger i get very offended when i hear ppl say "welfare moms" or "welfare pigs" not everyone can go to school and get a good job. some ppl have no family or trust funds to help them when they are older. true some ppl abuse the system but with out it many hard working familes would starve. Food stamps and medicare are a neccesity in this country for many americans who struggle with the low paying jobs. Ifyou have never had to be on welfare consider yourself lucky becuse alot of ppl in this country are on some sort of public assistance.

I totally agree. People who have NEVER been on welfare are the first ones to scream "welfare abuse", etc.. They should have to live with 80% of their check going to pay rent, utilites, child care, etc. and then try to buy food, car repairs, medicine, etc with the other 20%.. U can't tell people what it's like..Most just think that their paycheck is going to take care of lazy, irresponsible people. There are some (though very few) that abuse the system.. The system makes it almost impossible to get off. I am on SS/SSI, I get a $10 raise, my food stamps go down $10 and my rent goes up $10...and I am supposed to better myself that way.. I said earlier that everyone should have to be on welfare or POOR for at least a month every year. They act like welfare is making us rich.. What a joke.. I get $30 worth of food stamps.. I get a LOT of groceries with that...my medicine is $1900 a month.. how can I take it without assistance. As for the ones who say "family is supposed to help".. my family that can help won't and the rest have less money than I do.. which is pathetic. People will always be ignorant if they haven't walked in our shoes..

I will tell you what the problem with welfare is. First, when a person is unable to take care of himself/herself, their family is supposed to provide assistance. If their family is unable, or there is no family, their church, synagogue, mosque & c, is supposed to step up to the plate.

Next come private charities. The Salvation Army and groups like that. After that is exhausted, the LOCAL government will get involved to make sure that nobody is going to starve, freeze or go without medical services. In this traditional scenario, the person who needs assistance is known. It is a matter of fact how many dependents this person has. The intent at this point is to get the person the help he or she needs. If the person is able, they should be required to work for their assistance.

The problem shows itself when the federal government gets involved. Now, the person becomes a number. This number justifies some bureaucrat's job. There is no incentive to get this person off of welfare. Rather, more people on welfare may well justify a raise for the bureaucrat.

The recipient is not personally known to the system. Some recipients collect under several names. Exactly how many dependent children is another mystery. To compound the problem, food stamps, which I understand have now been replaced with welfare credit cards, further increase the likliehood of fraud.

The welfare recipient is entitled to go to the hospital whenever he or she has a cold, by taxi, no less. All paid for by the taxpayer, who can't afford such a luxury. I have personally known people on welfare who had cable TV, with the premium channels, and air conditioning. They watched TV all night and drank.

There was absolutely NO effort to get these people off of welfare. That is their occupation.

I am certainly for helping people in need. If a person approaches me for money on the street, I will never give it to them. If they say that they are hungry, I will take them to a restaurant. I have done this. If they need money for medicine, I will go to the drug store with them, but I won't give them money, so they can buy drugs or alcohol.

I want to help, but I am tired of being taken advantage of.

I own a couple of houses and I take housing assistance for some of my tennants. It is not easy for them to be on assistance.

They do have to work and pay a portion of their rent. So I get one check from the state and one from the tennant.

Their financial situation is reviewed yearly and if they do get a raise, they lose a portion of their benefits.

The system is getting more and more strict, you would not believe the standards they have to meet. I could not live that way, their quality of life is not to be envied.

On the other hand, the system sort of forces them to stay enslaved. If they do get ahead a little bit (say a small raise), it means their benefits will be cut. So if you don't get a significant raise, or a major change in circumstances, it almost makes it worth it to stay on the system. Since the decrease wil knock you right back down to where you started.

People generally have a problem with welfare for one of two reasons.

1) They see the small minority that do abuse the system and assume everyone is.

2) They have no clue what it is like to struggle in a low paying job and are horrified at the idea of being "forced" to give some of their tax dollars to fellow human beings in need. Oddly, most who are so horrified claim to be Christians.

I agree with you Sara as I too was on public assistance for the first few years of my life. Unfortunately many individuals have taken advantage of the system as you mentioned and those rotten apples spoiled the bunch. Sadly enough many people on welfare stay on it their whole lives and I think people get upset because they feel that a percentage of their hard earned paychecks are going towards people that do not want to better themselves and become independent.

I think that welfare has received a bad name because people tend to look down on the people who have been forced to result to such method in order to take care of themselves and their children. I think that welfare can be extremely beneficial when it is given to the right type of families. As to those people who look down on welfare i say get over it because everybody needs help at some point in their lives.

It has a bad name because of the few people that abuse it. I know the majority of people on welfare use it the right way and it helps them but its like that old saying 'the few spoil it for the many'.

It only takes one bad thing to mess up a good thing. You have people that abuse the system and that is what people focus on. They don't focus on the people who are trying to better themselves instead of ride the government.

Socialism is a monopoly. basically like each monopoly, that's a bad thought. there's a reason we've anti-have faith regulations. besides, it is immoral. Socialism steals money from the "haves" to furnish to the "have nots". Stealing is inaccurate, regardless of the reason. The "haves" ought to help the "have nots", in the event that they do no longer, it makes them undesirable electorate and undesirable people. whether, stealing from them is basically as undesirable. You the two have faith in freedom, or government. they are mutually unique. Socialism is undesirable because of the fact it is anti-freedom, for this reason anti-American, and anti-human.

It has gotten a bad name because it subsidizes the low income lifestyle some Americans live, whereas other Americans work hard to get themselves out of low paying jobs so they can provide for themselves and their families, without using the government for assistance.
