When the baby and uterus get big and heavy and mom lies on her back it can compress the vena cava (the artery that supplies blood to the lower half of the body) and it can cause numbness or even kidney problems for mom and it can also cut off baby's blood flow to the placenta. It is very rare and you would have to lie that way for a really long time.

Besides the very good answers/reasons given, once you progress in size you will automatically start sleeping on you side. Because it will be much more comfortable. Sleeping on your back you will find that there will be more pressure on you lungs and more difficult to breath as well as increased difficulty of digesting your food. It only makes sense.
I am 68 and a man but my kids mother had 6 kids. I nurtured, observed, studied, babied and pampered her thru each on as well as being in the delivery room with four of them. The last one was twins and I was at home taking care of the other four-smile. So, I well remembered what she went thru and I did everything I could to help her. Twas the least I could do-smile.
Good Luck. If the babies daddy is with you tell him I said, it is important that he do the same for the more comfortable you are and the more attention given the better for you and the baby.

This must be new advice, because of the fact i became on no account advised it over twenty years in the past. i think of this is undesirable if docs are telling pregnant woman what component to sleep on, because it provides them some thing else to be afflicted approximately, and the concern could save them wakeful. maybe the docs mothers slept on the incorrect component, so it made the docs communicate rubbish some years later? the place is the evidence approximately how lots mothers slept on the two component and the end result on their toddlers? became there some thing to make mothers sleep interior the appropriate place all night [a restraint?}, that has produced toddlers with a better IQ, or who're greater healthy than general?

I was told that pregnant women should sleep on their left sides because that's where the placenta is and if you do that, the baby will get a better supply of blood flow. Don't know if it's true, but that's what I was told.

Supposedly the left side allows increased blood flow to your baby. Also, as you get bigger, it is best not to sleep on your back as the pressure from the baby and your excess weight will be on top of certain nerves, veins, and arteries located around your back. It might cause increased back ache as you progress, but I'm still having a hard time sleeping on my side (22 weeks currently).

I am 38 weeks pregnant and I sleep on either side and on my back. I will sleep which ever way makes me comfortable! My Dr. told me sleeping on your back can cause back pain due to the pressure of the baby. But I think if you're comfortable on your back, then sleep on your back—I DO!

It helps the blood circulation. You're pretty early in the pregnancy, you will see as time goes on that sleeping on your back is problematic later in the pregnancy. You may have trouble breathing, it may stress the baby because of pressure on the umbilical cord, or in my case, it oddly made me wicked nauseated, so much so that I had to delivery my son laying on my side because laying on my back made me throw up constantly. It's pretty comfortable especially if you get a pillow for your tummy and one for between your legs to keep your hips level.

For some reason, laying on your left side increases blood flow and oxygen to you and the baby. I had all my kids close together and from sleeping on my left side every night for almost 3 years, its the only way i can sleep now.lol

You are told to sleep on your side because it improves blood circulation to the baby. I bought a pillow to help me stay on my side and it didn't help. Every morning I would wake up on my back, so the doctor told me to just go to sleep on my side and if I turned over or anything it wasn't a big deal. So just sleep however is most comfortable for you. Double-check with your doctor just to be sure.
