yesterday i got a violation for using the word idiot and it did truly apply to the question asker so what does all this violation stuff mean and who decides if you get a violation i feel it to be idiotic in the first place

well yahoo only hand's out the violations it was either the person who asked the question that reported you or some idiot took offense at your use of the word idiot.

There are certain works that incur the wrath of others.

"Idiot", "stupid", "moron" and any combination of those will get that violation for "insulting other participants"

I have discovered that the softer "fool" works well and I have never gotten a violation notice for calling someone a fool, but i have been cuffed for implying stupidity.

True, they may very well be "I" or "S" or "M", but try to aviod those openly provocative terms

I've gotten violations for not answering a question the proper way. I'm not sure if we lose points though.

It means that you did not follow the rules in the guidelines, they probably thought you were insulting the asker or something.
