Probably the best book ever written about investing is "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham, who is the dude who taught Warren Buffett everything he knows. Granted, it's a dry read, but the newest version has some great chapter notes written by Jason Zwieg, who's a writer for Money magazine.

You can check a few internet sites like yahoo/finance, or moneycentral at msn...they usually have some spot on the page about " beginning investing".....another one is : investopedia.
Jim Cramer has a couple of books...also catch his T.V. show to see how one guy thinks about " trading"
Another program on CNBC is " Fast Money" those guys are all pretty astute traders.
.......BUT, nothing is going to make you learn like " getting in"...
log on to E-trade... fill out an application, get an account....then start looking for investments.....(if you have your money on the line you'll pay a LOT more attention.
I think you'd start by researching stocks ( also on-line)... are you going to get into the big American companies that you know?...the Procter& gamble, At&T, Boeing...slow steady money types? Get a core of holdings like that.. then look to "up" your returns on trends with companies( here and foreign) that are growing (and profitting) faster...
You'll get the hang of it and develop a style faster than you can imagine!!
Also...read up on ETF's ... investing in sectors, indices, countries in a diversified fashion ( without buying 15 different stocks)... and unlike mutual funds, you can buy as little or as much as you want
