at first, i'd just sorta grin and bear it. it's kind of like when people look @ you when you are pregnant or want to touch your belly. babies awaken a very primitive biological beast in all of us that makes us do dumb things. forgive them. Realize they are just envious of your baby and the special gift you have recieved.... sans dirty diapers ;)
i would give them a subtle cue and say "well thank you. She is ___ monthes old." that will most liekly solve your problem.
if they don't pick up on it, if it is a woman, say "well thank you SIR!"

you can thank the "new unisex revolution" (for lack of a better term) for this problem. Great effort is put by many people these days into pushing the idea that men and women are not any different. As a result, many men wear earings, so as far as they're concerned, that no longer automatically means it's a girl. People wear all kinds of color for clothing, and that doesn't mean a whole lot anymore either.
Also, some people are just plain stupid so you just have to bear with them and point it out nicely like some of the other answerers mentioned above.
I wouldn't blame you if you told these people that they're idiots, but it's safer to just dismiss it, especially if it's your boss and it's about time for a promotion.

You can check here the best service: http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=538
It's cheap and gives you a great service!
I have been looking online for a reverse cell phone lookup service and came accross the reverse phone detective. I have tried to punch in a few cell numbers and they say they have information for some but not all numbers. If the number I type in comes up, they tell me where the phone is located, but only what state...
The free reverse telephone lookup doesn't works properly. To get interesting information, cash will must be paid. The free searches don't provide considerably more than what might be found through the telephone directory or personal information and they just need your email to send spam.
The service that I posted above is definitely the best service that I could find. You can have these kind of informations:
Want to know who is Calling
Need to find someone based on their Address
Find anyone by their Email address
Find by Name
and much more...
You ought to stay far from shady reverse telephone lookup destinations, undoubtedly you won't get any information after you make the installation. Remain faithful to a reputable reverse telephone lookup site like http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=538 that has been on the market for a considerable measure of years. With their reverse cell phone lookup tool you can find out information behind any cell or land line number. Type in the persons cell phone number and you will be given access to their report, including name cell and land line numbers, and address.
It can be used also for a much deeper search. People wanting to get hold of all kinds of background reports, as well as cell phone numbers, addresses and names..
Trust it! It's a great service.

I had this same problem, but in reverse about 3 years ago while shopping in our mall. I saw a little baby all in pink and kindly commented on how cute "she" was, only to be very rudely (I mean RUDELY) told it was a boy! Go figure!
I think as long as the tone in your voice is pleasant & friendly and you thank them, then you can correct them anyway you see fit at the moment. I would have been fine with that.

I don't think you should be offended at all by this confusion of gender...think about it now; how many names have you heard that can be of both genders? A lot of people just don't know what to say, so they go with their best guess...and there are a lot of naive people. I would just kindly say this is my daughter her name is...with emphasis. Then smile and walk away.

I don't think there is a kind way to tell people. Your best bet is to just say "thank you" and keep on walking. People don't always think before they speak - they see a baby and just blurt out whatever comes to mind. Unfortunately it's annoying and obnoxious but be the bigger person and walk away...it's not worth any possible confrontations in my opinion :)

I actually don't think it's rude to point out that you have a daughter, not a son. Simply say, "Thank you, we think she's absolutely adorable." Remember that these people really mean well - they are commenting on the fact that you have a cute baby, after all. Even if they aren't terribly observant.

well, tough as it is, these folks do mean well and are paying your little sweetie a compliment. shrug it off, there are far more annoying things coming your way! just wait until you're in the kiddie play area and the woman beside you thinks it perfectly all right for her 8 year old son to play in the infant area and jump up and down on your beautiful little girls head for awhile! and then has the absolute gall to be astonished at you when you kindly ask him to stop or direct her attention to her devilish responsibility acting up right in front of her.....and then you've got to try to explain to your well-behaved child why you're leaving early.....sigh

Most people that say "he" is just out of habbit. They dont mean it to be offensive. They probably think about what they said right after. I noticed that when I would not correct them right after their little mix up they changed it to "she". At least there are still some good people, good enough to come up and mention that there is new life in the world. I wish that there were more.

Always introduce your child by their name. It should be assumed that names will provide the obvious gender reference.
In the case of dual gender names (Kelly, for example), follow up the introduction with telling the random person about where you got the inspiration for his/her name.
Using masculine/feminine identifiers (his/her) should help alleviate a person's curiosity of your daughter's gender.
In the event of further ignorance, it's time to pretend your cell phone is ringing and walk away.
