Okay, suppose you have three color poker chips.

The reds are 100s, the blues are 10s and the whites are 1s. Now you have a number like 458

That's 4 red, 5 blue and 8 white
Subtract 10 = take away one blue

Now you have 4 red, 4 blue and 8 white. 448.

Ha ha ....go bequalmin. First try showing your little one with real money. Grab your penny jar and some change. Put 10 pennies on one side and a dime on the other. do the same for the nickle and quarter. Then set up some math questions and ask her to solve them with money. Tell her she is buying some candy and has to pay the clerk, how much would she have to take away from the money she has in her pocket. that's what I did with mine.
They actually had fun with this and we made a game out of it and they felt much more confident when they had to handle money. Then when I took them to the store I let them pay and the clerk was always so nice about it. Don't take them to busy store though...sometime when it is quiet and the clerk isn't rushed.

Just have her put her finger over the zero, do the math for the other part, then add the zero(s) after. For example, 10 x 3= 1x 3 and then put the zero next to the 3 to make 30.
