It's Raoul as an old man. He was the Viscount de Chagne. Notice at the end that he goes to her grave? It lists her as the Countess de Chagne, devoted mother and wife. Also, the rose with the ring the Phantom took from her shows him that the Phantom is still alive, and is still in love with her, too.

Yeah, it's Raoul. During the musical, we only see old Raoul at the very beginning. During the movie, the entire movie is told in a flashback by Raoul. Christine is dead, and we don't know what has happened to Erik, but the black rose at the end tells us that Erik (The Phantom) is still alive. During the musical, it begins at the auction, but then the rest of the musical takes place without flashbacks.

I thought the film was beautifully shot - the cinematography was stunning. However, Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum were just plain awful - particularly in singing terms. When I saw the stage production (on the West End) I didn't like it that much - the sound was appalling and the set changes were unbelievably noisy, and the production felt tired, but the singing was good. Off to see the stage production in Australia in a couple of months (wouldn't have bothered except that a friend is in it) so we'll see if a newer production is any better than an old production. On balance, though, I preferred the stage show purely because the singing and acting was better.

it is Raoul, and the older woman is the teacher at the theatre. they are having an auction and the flashbacks come to life. the thing that plays music is the one he saw when he went to rescue Christine. he wants to buy it but the woman is biding for it.
