What about getting her an album to scrapbook your trip together. You can go to Hobby Lobby or Michaels and find some really pretty albums that aren't too expensive. Maybe put a page in the front with a letter telling her how much you are looking forward to your trip together and how much fun your adventure is going to be... that sort of thing. Maybe you could find a cute passport and travel document holder so she can keep everything organized during your trip.
Good luck!

If you're planning a trip, why not a charm bracelet that she can add to along the way? Or how about a really nice photo album with film or paper to print out digital photos?

Why don't you adopt a Koala or a Kangaroo from a zoo. Not to expensive was about 20 quid when i did it for a penguin. then is something that will remind them about Australia and their amazing animals. wouldn't recommend buying a real one though..

perhaps a special scrapbook for her to start when she goes on her trip to australia? u can go to michael's get a simple photograph album or scrapbook, and get these stickers called "jolee's boutique" and design it urself..they have Awesome, 3-D stickers, really cute stuff!
or u can go to Color me Mine and paint her something ceramic, and they glaze it for you. u pay for the piece and the painting fee.
a journal? they have cute handmade ones at barnes and nobles, or agian u can decorate it urself w/ the sticker stuff.
how about a snow globe? i tried to make thsoe for christmas but u can make it w/o water.... either buy plastic figurines or make ur own out of sculpey clay and paint, and glue them onto a base (i used a terra cotta planter thing), and then glue a upside down candle votive (slightly rounded one looks better)... decorate the base. it looks really cute! i also ended up just giving my figurines away, but theyr'e really cute.
finally, u can go onto www.etsy.com and get ideas, OR buy handmade stuff from there!! :) good luck

This is really a tough question to answer. I mean sure we could give you sugestions but it might not be what she's into. Since she's your friend, you should know what she likes.
Maybe try and make her something. Those are always nice gifts.
