It really depends on the car. yes, on average foreign cars will cost more to repair but numbers are decieving and averages are easily thrown. How many cars are made in america that cost more than $75,000? Next to none. How many cars made overseas cost more than $75,000? A lot, you have BWM's, Medcedes', Lambo's, Ferarries, Lexus', Bently's and all sorts of luxury high priced cars made overseas. And in general the more expensive the car the more expensive the maintenance. So that right there alone would throw your average costs for foreign cars to a higher number than American cars.
In general however, if you compare apples to apples. Such as a 15K honda to a 15K ford it's going to cost about the same. There's no shortage of parts and often replacement parts are made in america by american companies for both cars. And for the cost of the mechanic, unless you have a luxury car a car is a car they all have the same parts and work near exactly the same. Any mechanic should be competent enough to fix minor to moderate problems on any car.

Not anymore. In the past it was due to the availability of parts and the familiarity of the mechanic with the car. Now these days, "foreign" cars being produced in America, making the parts easily assessable. Plus, with the popularity of foreign cars, more mechanics have worked on them. There are also schools a mechanic can go to teaching about foreign cars.
