What *I* would like to see is someone like you either actually sending such a proposal to your Congressman and/or Senator; or, better yet, running for public office with that as a plank in the platform.
Remember, if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

America as well as Russia who was first in Using technology to orbit the earth, have developed satelites system which are used for navigation and globe positioning systems. Also using satelites for communication has been quite a techonolgical revolution of the century.
Now to develpop further space reseach and experimentation is basically a luxury that only if resources and cost effectiveness can be used.
We will probably have starving population in the near future and money allocation must take priority. So there is a limit for spending on space exploration.
As far as transportation and travelling is concerned Europe has beat america in the development of modern train systems which can move at high velocity and cut travel time.
If Better train system were developed in America ;trucks density can be reduced dramatically on the roads. and fuels consumption problems could be reduced. We need to concentrate more on the problems on earth than on the problems in SPACETIME.

I concurr. There is too much possibility in space to let it get put on a back burner. we should be really uniting as a nation, the public and private sector, the gov't and the people, nasa and my astronomy class nerds, myself included. why it's such a small part of what we do is beyond me. I mean if the war in iraq and all the bad crap going on in the world keeps getting worse, wouldn't it be nice if the option was available to just move to another location in the solar system. if america does this first we would have claim to the entire celestial body we inhabit. no borders or customs, the whole dam thing would be ours. If the russians want to visit, fine. but it's our rock. and they will have to go home

I fully agree. And I would make one distinction--the American people are,for the post part, for space--but most don't see it as an issue that needs their support. If they were aware of the potential benefits--and of the increasing danger that we are going to be slow off the mark when space really does start developing, I think you'd see a lot of support.
currently, however, we have a deplorable lack of vision among our political leaders--including an administration what neither understands nor is supportive of scientific research. And our Congress is run by special interests--who don't see a profit in space for themseles, so they dont push for it.

Er.....in the short term, there is no actual benefit to making space travel affordable. Where would tourists go? America is still far ahead in all areas of space technology. Expect for destroying satellites it would seem. I'd like to see the nanotube elevator built. Then we could send off nasty bits like nuclear waste without worrying about the rocket detonating in the atmosphere and showering the planet with fallout.
