I have often pondered this question myself. I have come to the conclusion that as long as the media places these type of people in our faces and that is all that is in the magazines and we buy into these lifestyles instead of realizing that we are all individuals and what works for one may not work for all we will always find ourselves seeking approval from others.

beautiful to one person is not beautiful to another. IT's simple. Look at the pressure today to be thin. I know I get more attention being thin. and that is AWFUL. Sucks cause I know some day when I'm older and pregnant I'm not gonna be considered so cute anymore.
People strive, unfortunately, to be like Hollywood women, who are sometimes really gross looking. But then there are women like Kate Winslet who to me has a pretty normal body and is really beautiful.
Also though, being overweight is unhealthy. along with being underweight. I feel like if you are trying to lose weight and have been consistent and then plateau out at a certain weight you may not think is ideal, it probably is and your body is telling you that.

Who knows - it COULD be because it is harder to lose weight than to gain weight...therefore, thin is the look people want to achieve (because it is not that easy)? It could be because becoming thin is a challenge ..more so than getting fat. Most people can get fat easily within a day or two but it ain't easy losing the weight. I don't know, this is just my guess :)

Because it is like a modern social law to be thin, and people tend to fit in, although it is not always the best for their health and looks. I agree we should aim the healthy weight, not anorexic features.

its just as unattractive to be fat. being healthy is the goal. you're not "curvy" or a "real woman" just bc you're fat and proud. skin and bones is gross too...there's a healthy medium.
