No, puerto rico residents and other territories that belong to the US will not be need passports to enter the mainland US. This is according to the US department of state's website FAQ. I have added the link below so that you can check.
UPDATE: I just wanted you to know that the link that the poster PrincessaSabia below is reporting says directly in nice italics... Puerto Rico and other territories will NOT need passports. So I don't know what that poster is talking about.
Oh and that the US doesn't have a commonwealth... they are territories. Commonwealths are a British system used for Britain's ex-territories (like Canada, Australia etc)
Hope this helps.

puerto rico is a commonwealt of the US so its part of the US - no passport. It would be like getting a passport to go to DC which also isn't a state

YES you do the new RULE is that became effective earlier this week is that EVERYBODY HAS to have passport to leave and enter the United States. Even though Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the U.S its still in the Caribbean and you need a passport.

I doubt it. Isn't Puerto Rico part of the US (not a state, but a territory or something)?
Ask a travel agent or the airline. They should know.
