I have googled and googled...but have yet to find the answer. Why does one's voice sound grumbly and hoarse first thing in the morning?

Your vocal cords are just like all the other muscles in your body when you first wake up...they don't want to work. By the time you have showered, fixed breakfast, gotten dressed and are walking out the door, the rest of your body is fairly warmed up because you have moved around quite bit. However, you don't use your voice near as much in the morning (unless you're one of those obnoxious morning people) so it can take longer to get it going.

As an opera singer, it would be nice if I could wake up and stretch my vocal cords just like I stretch my back. Alas, I can't. If you care, most opera singers HATE singing in the mornings for just this reason. It takes a lot of effort to get the voice warmed up. Some of us even get up early, hum while taking a hot shower and do aerobics to get our blood going if we have an early performance just to get the voice warmed up.

Hey, Vocals cords, like any other muscle in the body, need to be warmed up to perform effectively. If your hoarseness continues for the rest of the day then maybe you're not getting enough rest. The best treatment for a hoarse voice is to be quiet. Don't even whisper (which is worse for it). Search for 'rockthestagenyc' on youtube. It's a channel by a vocal teacher named Kevin Richards and he's pretty helpful. Use his warm up techniques. I've found that getting some exercise first thing in the morning makes my voice pretty limber. Do you have problems with acidity? If so then you might want to get checked up for acid reflux (GERD). Reflux is when stomach acids leak up the food pipe and this generally happens at night time when we're lying down for a long time. The acid causes problems with the vocal cords. I have it and I used to be hoarse every morning because of it. Drink plenty of room temperature water and get a good nights sleep. Both are very important for a healthy voice. Take care.

Obviously because people don't use their voice while they're asleep, nor do they drink to lubricate their vocal chords

possibly because their throats are dry from not drinking anything after 8 hours of sleep.
