Because they're
a) tone deaf, so they can't hear how bad they sing
b) attention whores, craving their 15 minutes of fame (but don't suspect that it will only last 15 seconds, although their humiliation will last a lifetime)

The point of American Idol is entertainment value, especially with the early episodes (I spoke with people who worked on the show and they screen the auditions so that only the good and the worst get in - the middle ground or average people don't get as far as seeing the three judges). Many of the actual winners can't even sing all that well, with there being better singers in most choral groups or among music majors.

But people go on for their couple minutes of fame and the hopes that somehow their looks, mannerisms, or whatever else will gain them stardom. Hell, one of the chicks from that "dreamgirls" movie was an American Idol reject. I'm sure people are hoping it will happen to them.

There are though plenty of people who are delusional in the thought that they can sing well (to their own ears) and go for it genuinely expecting to get somewhere.

I truly believe that American Idol accepts some contestants just for a laugh - they know they can't sing, but allow them to participate purely for entertainment. Think how boring the show would be if everyone were a great singer!

Some people just don't understand the point of it. Then there are those who who believe they can sing but really can't. The opinion that matters is the judges. Some people can sing and some can't, some people don't even know or care that they can sing. That's just the way it is.

I think there are 3 types of people who audition for Idol.
The clueless..Mom and Dad said I could sing so I know I really can.
The stupid...I just KNOW I'm the next Idol cuz I'm sexy!
The limelighters...I just want my 15 seconds!
I think the girl that went off last night was on crack or something cuz she was wayyyy out there...

If I ever went to an audition, it would be for the sole reason of allowing the judges not to feel bad about telling me NO. I can't sing and I know it. I would never go and waste their time. I think the reason that most go, is they believe they can sing. They just never heard themselves and their friends are tone deaf.

in case you extremely go with to be on the tutor, do like William Chung, you'd be on those first weeks of the tutor even as they're displaying the auditions, the manufacturers imagine that makes tremendous television. you also would properly be on the tutor The worst of yank idol.

Probably just to get attention, and their crazy. Most of them actually think they can sing, and no one who know's them will tell them how terrible they sound. So I think some of them are stupid.
