The names of the original eight reindeer are taken from the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas":
Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!
Rudolph would be the ninth.

Santa Clause originally had 8 reindeer, there names were:
1. Blitzen
2. Dancer
3. Dasher
4. Donner
5. Comet
6. Cupid
7. Prancer
8. Vixen
A couple years later Rudolph joined the team. So, now there are a total of Nine Reindeer.
