Children like then because they are fun and move. Children like to move and will imitate other such objects that move. Also those charecters talk in a way that children will understand and use humor that they understand as well.

You cannot classify Spongebob in the same category as Elmo and Barney...Songebob is as much for the adults as for the kids.
Honestly I don't know why Barney is still around cuz every parent I know hates him. As for Elmo..shes just cute..and as long as there is Sesame Street..there will be Elmo.

I'm 25 and I'm not ashamed to say that I like watching Spongebob with my nephews. The other guys annoy me. I guess they are popular because of the amount of kids that we have.
