Leonardo DiCaprio was in Gangs of New York...definitely about Irish gangs in New York.

The movie is Far and Away, it's about an Irish man who wants to get land and comes to America to get it. He meets a "rich" woman along the way who wants something of her own and they travel together. He takes up boxing to make some money for them, this is the part you are referring to.
I think you are getting parts of this mixed with Gangs of NY.

it's called minority star trek report: the next generation. colm meany plays a tough gangster who works at a transporter station. tom cruise is an out of luck cop who is singlehandedly fighting future crimes. but when they rent an apartment together, all hilarity ensues.
