Oh gosh no the Americans have all the evil scum of the earth in Guantanamo or so we are led to believe. British prisoners are all like Norman Stanley Fletcher.

I would say about 60% are scum and deserve to be there, Murderers, Rapists, Cowards who mug/rob/terrorise old people, persistent re-offenders who break our human rights ie Burglars.
Many of the rest have been imprisoned for violations against the big boys, falsely imprisoned/set up, or are inside for what are really petty crimes

Each and every one of them, especially the wrongly convicted.

Actually I read a biography of Charles Bronson (supposedly the most dangerous man in Britain) and actually he seems a decent guy who just has a problem with anger. So probably most are decent sorts who just have made bad choices.

Can you really guarantee that every person convicted of a crime is the true perpetrator? I don't think so. There are people there who don't belong. But the vast majority shouldn't be allowed in society just to perpetrate their evil again.

I'm not sure who said it, but I will repeat, or at least paraphrase- 'there are two types of people in prison, those who should never be let out, and those who shouldn't be there in the first place.'

Myself, I could only judge people case-by-case, if at all.

No. I know a few people who are there more for stupidity than evilness. Its only this week that the govt have decided that only the worst criminals should go to jail. Theres still a few there for non payment of fines, not paying council tax, and other minor stuff.

no, not all prisoners are evil. i think some are repeat offenders because it is a way of life - it is better in there, from what we see and hear in the media, that most working peaople can afford, no bills, cooking, laundry, tv licence etc

i will get off my soap box now but thanks for reading!

Not really. Some people are just victims of circumstance and had they been given a different opportunity life would have been different for them. you cant make broad assessments of people like that.

Well, I think the ones locked up are murderers, rapists and people who don't pay their council tax (especially pensioners). The burglars, thieves, shoplifters, drunks etc are still on the streets. To prey on us.
