72%+23%=95% either accepted or rejected the peanuts. That leaves 5% who were asleep. 36 passengers were asleep so 36=5% of the total
total=36/.05=720 passengers

If I understand this problem, the thirty six sleeping passengers account for 100-72-23=5 percent of the total number of passengers. Therefore, if x is the total number of passengers, .05*x=36....x=720.

.72x + .23x + 36 = x

x = 720

This should be the answer, however it is worded poorly. Your question says "72% of the passengers who were asked" not "72% of the total passengers". This implies that 72% of the people asked (were awake) wanted peanuts not 72% of the entire population. This means that 5% of the people awake neither accepted nor rejected the peanuts and are unaccountable for. If this is infact the case then 720 is not the answer and we need more information.

72% accepted
23% rejected

Total 95% (72+23) were offered
Remaining 5% (100-5) were asleep.

If 5% is 36 passengers (as mentioned in the problem) how many is 100%

(100/5) * 36 = 20*36 = 720

So the total number of passengers in the flight were 720

Thanks,

Assuming the flight attendants asked everyone who was awake, the number who accepted or rejected the peanuts doesn't matter, just how many total. 72% + 23% = 95%, leaving 5%, or 1/20th, that weren't asked. 36 * 20 = 720, so 720 passengers were on the flights, total.

P = passengers. .72P = accepted and .23P = rejected
.05P = 36 who were asleep and not asked

P = 36 ÷ .05 = 36 X 20 = 720 total passengers

.72P = .72 X 720 = 518 accepted
.23P = .23 X 720 = 166 rejected
.05P = .05 X 720 = 36 not asked

Total passengers = 720

Read the question carefully--

95% of the passengers...that were awake and asked... accepted or rejected the peanuts. the other 5% did something else.

And also there were 36 sleeping passengers.

I don't think you can solve the problem as written.

95% either accepted or rejected the peanuts

5 % were asleep

5%=36
5% x 20 = 36 x 20
100% = 720 total passengers

72%+23% = 95% were asked so 5% were not asked.
So 36 = .05x
x = 36/.05 = 720 persons

Must have been a super jumbo jet.
