The 70's, in my opinion. That decade was full of great teams and awesome players. I am not going to look at this question in terms of just players and teams though. The main thing I loved about football in the 70's and prior is they let you play the game. Didn't have all these replays, protecting a player from getting hit, lame penalties, etc. You play until the whistle blows at the end of each play. The ground is just as much a part of the sport as the player or the ball so if you let go of it as you were being tackled and knees on the ground it was still a fumble then. Its all relevant. In the 70's you didn't have that... your skill was tested each play until the whistle blew. Just was a tougher era to play in. Plus the egos and inflated salaries weren't there... those guys played for the sake of playing the game.

there have been dynastys for every decade since the 60's.
60's-Packers 5 Championships
70's-Steelers 4 Chamionships
80's-49ers 4 championships
90's-Cowboys 3 chapionships
2000's-Patriots 3 chapionships,for now.
The best era was the 70's becasue you did't have all the Jerks who made 89 million dollars a year and complain about it.

As a Redskin's fan, I love the 80's, but for football in general I thing the current NFL is the best. The parity between teams is very close--even dynasty teams like the Patriots are extremely beatable. I don't know of another time in football history where the phrase "On any given Sunday" was so applicable. It seems like every game is interesting, even when someone is a clear favorite.

It depends what you like. If you're a fan of parity, or believe in "any given Sunday," then it would be the current era. If you're a fan of dynasties - which I admittedly am - then it was probably 10-20 years ago when dynasties still ruled.
As for skill level, I think today's game is better. It's just a natural development of the game, in that players are bigger, stronger and faster than they were years ago. I love some of those '70s and '80s team, but I know that their offensive and defensive lines would get run over by most of today's teams.

Easily the current era due to the salary cap. No longer can teams who have the most money automatically win like that joke of a league MLB. The Patriots had/have a dynasty in the current system which is much more difficult then any other dynasty. In baseball, the Yankees and Red Sox will always have competitive teams because they can cover up their mistakes by throwing more money out.

Current-we are in the Golden Age of Football right now-it is the most popular sport in America, (holding a position baseball once held -until the 1994 strike).

I preferred the 70's for my own selfish reasons - the Dolphins won two Super Bowls then! 8-)

early 90's ...The Buffalo Bills !!! were the greatest better than San Fran, the Steelers,Bears.or any other team in the league.
I know they lost 4 in a row,but they had 4 bad days in 4 years..that is not a bad percentage..I think..
Go Bills !

Oh, and two more: 4 rings.
