I prenatal vitamins are enough. They have the right dosage of everything. I asked my doctor the same thing and he said "too much of something is not good." So, don't take any extra iron pills.

Iron pills make women sick. Some women can't tolerate particular prenatal vitamins and this is actually due to the amount of iron it has. Iron makes some women feel sick.
You don't actually need to take iron unless your blood work shows you are low on iron.... in which case, your doctor would have mentioned this to you.
If I were you, hold off on the iron pills and just keep up with your prenatal vitamins. Prenatal vitamins actually have iron in it already.
What you can do is take calcium supplements. Tums is actually good for this as it takes care of your calcium needs and any acid you may have. If you aren't getting calcium from your regular diet, it is even more important to have calcium supplement. If your baby doesn't get enough calcium from the foods you eat, it takes calcium from your body. This will in turn increase the chances of you suffering from osteoperosis when you're old.

Prenatal vitamins should have enough iron for now. You will have some blood work done in about another 8 weeks and they will test your iron if it's low the Dr. will suggest an iron supplement. I had low iron so I needed to take them the last two months of my pregnancy.

your doctor will be able to answer that question based on your specific needs, but studies have shown that iron plays a very important part in fetal and child development, and your prenatal vitamins should contain some level of iron supplement. you probably won't take both a prenatal with iron PLUS iron pills. again, better safe than sorry - ask your doctor.

I"ve laways been anemic (iron deficiancy) So I take them along with my prenatals. But You should only be taking iron pills IF your doc says you need them, which after a blood test for low iron will answer. So until then your prenatal is fine!

I would assume that you don't need any extra iron pills since the prenatal have enough iron in them.
Consult your doc before you do this, too much iron can be very bad.

Just take the prenatal vitamins for now..Your doctor will test you for anemia when you have your gestational diabetes test around 24 weeks. If you are anemic he will prescribe an iron supplement.
Good luck

Your doctor will usually tell you if you need them. They tell from your blood test if you have low iron. I did, I got on the iron supplement pills, and I was advised to also eat Total cereal. If your doctor is not concerned about your iron, but you want to make sure you are getting all of the nutrients you should, you may want to consider just eating the cereal sometimes.

Your doctor will tell you when it is time to start taking iron. Maybe not for another 10 weeks. Just take your prenatals for now and they will do blood tests to check you for anemia. They will give you a prescription when it is time. You really don't want to start taking them too early becuase they can cause constipation and it's not fun!!!

most prenatal vitamins provide the necessary iron. if u take too much iron, u become constipated and that increases ur chances of developing hemorrhoids during pregnancy.
