Zune has two, and only two, things going for it over iPod. Built-in FM receiver, and built-in FM transmitter. Everything else is pretty much chasing the iPod for design.
In spite of what some people will claim, no interface has managed to best the click-wheel, possibly because everyone keeps trying to somewhat emulate the design (and are always somewhat failing to do so) instead of scrapping it altogether and coming up with something just as revolutionary as the click-wheel was when the iPod Mini was released. And it's amusing how some people keep complaining about being "forced" to use iTunes. Firstly, there are 3rd Party interfaces that you could choose to use instead of iTunes. Second, iTunes is far ahead of the pack in terms of seamless integration with the associated player. Most players are sort of cobbled onto existing software, like Windows Media Player, and the rest usually have poorly designed exclusive software.
So, being upset about being "forced" to use iTunes is like being upset about being "forced" to drive a fancy new sports car to work every day. Now, that's not to say that iTunes is perfect for everyone (some people are, after all, running outdated computers that don't have near enough power to handle the more recent updates without major hardware upgrades), but 70% of the overall market, and 90% of the large-capacity hard-drive market go with iPod over the rest of the competition combined, Zune included. Frankly, at the present time, Zune is something of an also-ran in terms of just the iPod competition. There are other brands that have risen to the top of the remaining market share, and the Zune isn't even in a position to challenge them at present, much less the all-pervasive iPod. Give them a generation or two and they'll probably figure out a way to dethrone the second-place brand (which I believe is either the Creative Zen lineup or the SanDisk Sansa lineup right now) like they did to the PS3 with the XBox 360, but you can't out-innovate someone by copying them, and that's what it's going to take to kick the iPod from its lofty perch. Still, there will always be people who will try to "fight the system" by boycotting the most successful product line, which would include both the iPod (because it has clearly won the portable digital media player market for the foreseeable future), and the Zune (because it's made by the people who make the Windows OS).

Zune! The navigation is pretty much the same as an iPod. I found it to be very intuitive as soon as I opened the box. The screen is big, great for watching a movie while on exercising. The software is iffy right now, not quite as polished as iTunes, but very useable. I expect the software to become better over the next year or so with further updates. Zune also has wifi and FM tuner. The potential uses for wifi are neat. The Zune case is also more robust than the iPod case.
But the kicker is that you can "hack" Zunes. A quick web surf will show you all the neat things you can do to it with a couple steps; turn it into a portable hard drive that can store any type of file, change sharing restrictions, even run Linux on it.
I guess if your technologically illiterate and you like to overpay for things that are trendy and shiny, go with the iPod. But if you have any self-respect, get the Zune. Or better yet get a top-of-the-line SanDisk Sansa that will play anything and has flash memory instead of the hard drive.

I got a video iPod last year and love it. It is very simple to use. Other devices I have seen - the PSP and some cell phones come to mind - try to do too much, and are very complex to use. iTunes and iPod are very easy. They're a breeze to use.
