You should never fight a horse because you WILL loose!
Now if you need to defend yourself from a horse that is loose in the field and is charging you is to not go in the field in the first place. Only extremely experienced horsepeople should deal with dangerous horses.
Your best bet would be to make yourself look big and scary......fast movements, loud noises, and waving a rope or coat around. Be aggressive. You want the horse to think that flight would be safer than fight.

Never fight a horse!!! Causes mistrust. Now if your trying to break it, try doing it in water. Harder for them to kick and tires the hell out of them.

I would venture to say running is out, kicking out, trying to chase it..out, ummm...hide and jump on it when it is unaware you are around? no...I have no idea.
