The History channel - And from the programs I've seen there WWI was a real ***** - Lots of 'trench warfare' and absolutely horrible living, fighting conditions.

The book "Across Five Aprils" would give you a pretty good idea. I think it was made into a movie, but I'm not sure. It might be hard to find an actual vet of that war to tell you, but if you can that's the best way. No one who wasn't there really knows.
After a debate with a few history buffs, we were torn between WWI and the Civil War as worst wars for soldiers since guns were invented. In WWI there was trench warfare, and the first widespread use of chemical warfare (mustard gas). Mounted machine guns began to be used, and rifles' accuracy had improved to almost modern standards. Worst of all was the poor planning by the generals--both sides just kept dumping more men into the meat grinder with no clear idea of how to make a real push to end the conflict.

History channels on Discovery (Sky TV). Lots of programmes about World Wars 1 and 2. One particular series is The First World War in Colour.
Also try some music research on the internet. Type in Lyrics of Eric Bogle songs. Then select The green fields of France and also The band played waltzing Matilda. These lyrics give a real flavour of WW1 fighting conditions.
Also internet topics such as Gallipolli or Dardenelles, Somme, Ypres, Poems of Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke.
Good luck.

I think there are only four or five surviving veterans of world war I, so you won;t be able to get a first hand account.
There are lots of good memoirs and books written by old soldiers which will help you, along with some good war poetry (Rupert Brook is good) - all of which you should be able to find in your local library.

I don't know if anyone's really still around from the first World War. If so, they're probably not online.
Try this site: http://www.worldwar1.com/
Looks like some vets were involved in putting it together.
