The operating system constantly crashes but only when i am connected to my modem with the power on, surfing the net. The PC will shut down and upon restart will state problems like TCP/IP error (with a yellow warning symbol next to it), DHCP error or System Error (with a red cross beside it) in the event viewer (found by right clicking my computer, going to manage and then clicking twice on event viewer). All the aforementioned issues are under the system folder of the Event Viewer. I also get error message sometimes saying server (with a yellow exclamation point symbol next to it) and cdrom (red 'x' next to it) saying that it failed to load. I contacted my pc manufacturer today and he said that the problem was more than likely caused by a network adapter/card and advised me to purchase a new one. From what i have described here, would you technical pc guys agree with this as the cause of the problem? I say again that it only ever crashes when my modem is connected (via ethernet).

By the way my OS is windows XP (Home Edition) and im running SP1 on it. I have had the pc for 4 years now. I have fully restarted the pc 5 times with product recovery disc to no avail as the problem remains. Technical adviser told me to purchase a PCI network card over telephone this morning

.
First things first.
Clearly the probelm IS in the modem; ergo TC/IP error.
Before you replace the modem.

Before we replace the modem
1. first download new drivers for 2 pieces of hardware.
Go to each hardware manufacturer's site and get the latest drivers issued. It's free.
Download to your desktop > install > reboot.

>>>To find the manufacturer look in your Device Manager:
START > right click MyComputer > Properties
tab Hardware > button Device Manager.

If installing new driver does not fix the problem:
Next
2. Try a new eternet cable between the modem and your computer.

3. Still have the problem?
Next
first contact your ISP provider that gave you the modem
and purchase the insurance for $5/month on the modem.
Just have them add it to your bill.
(This can save you a bundle, before calling out the repair guys).

After you have the insurance, call the ISP provider
and have them come out. If they want to replace the modem, which I think they will....
you're covered!

A new network card would be a great idea, they are very cheap so even if it did not work, you would have not spent to much money. Also you could try and reinstall your network drivers. I would do this in safe mode(press f11 over and over while your computer is booting up) then go to start, control panel, click system, then click hardware tab at the top, then click device manager, click the + next to "network adapters" un-install all the items below, then restart your computer and all should be well.

Being that a nic card costs 5 dollars it would be a good place to start.
