Yikes, I hope you're exaggerating. Maybe she has a permit for the gun and got a written warning for the rest?

Granny is probably a member of the Eastern Star. That's the one women can join. You have to be related to a Mason in order to join. It's the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can belong to. A lot of cops are Masons, so they would have considered her a sorority sister and maybe let her off with a warning if the speeding wasn't too bad.

Just to address some of the really bad information given on the answers below : We don't have our own version of the Bible. It's the Bible. There's no hazing. Most of the members are too old for that! Our secrets are handshakes and passwords, same as any other fraternity or sorority. The ritual, which is the book of all our ceremonies, is readily available at any used book store and sometimes even in libraries.

PLEASE don't make stuff up unless you have been there or read the ritual.

The Masons is a men's group much like Rotary or the Elks or the Eagles, except much older. Your grandmother is probably a member of Eastern Star, which is the women's affiliate. They do fundraising for the community, and have a strict code of honor their members are required to follow. When someone asks to become a member of the Masons, they are investigated by a committee to determine whether they are honorable, and are assigned a mentor to educate them as to the practices and requirements of the Masons.

Another thing which might be at play is, at least in my husband's lodge, many members of the county sheriff's department are Masons. He may have been a lodge brother of someone she knows, or he may know her from joint events with Eastern Star, so he let her go.

That was pretty much of an abuse of the Masonic affiliation. Not supposed to be used that way.

The Masons themselves is a men's club with roots back (supposedly) to those who built the Temple in Jerusalem. It is mostly Christian, but predates Christianity. They have a very strong moral and religious code. Many presidents have been members and probably a lot of the city council and cops are members in that particular town. You won't find many members of the Masons sitting in prisons because they police their own. They are a brotherhood of very fine men.

Eastern Star is probably what that grandmother belonged to. That is the female side of the Masons.

I have heard of a Grand Matron of the Eastern Star who casually showed her pin to a bank officer when he was on the verge of turning her down for a loan. She didn't have much of a credit rating because she'd never bought on credit before. The pin was enough to convince the bank officer (a Mason) that she was not going to default. He asked her why she didn't show it before and she simply replied, "I didn't think I'd have to."

Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men which derives from the medieval fraternity of Freemasonry. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws, customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtues by symbolic application of the operative stonemasons' working tools and by allegories, lectures and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to obey the principles of brotherly love, equality, mutual aid, secrecy, and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition that permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on legends of the Craft.

Once a person has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he desires to join. He gives the petition to one of the members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodges next stated meeting. The Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee to interview the petitioner in person and these men will report back to Lodge at the next stated meeting. After this report of the investigating committee the petitioner is voted on by the members who are present. Once a petitioner is accepted he is given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice - Fellow Craft and the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. There are certain requirements a candidate must meet before he can proceed from one degree to the next.

One must obtain the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before he is allowed to wear any Masonic jewelry.

One must have a belief in a Supreme Being.

The Tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are " Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. "

The Masonic Fraternity is not a Secret Society but rather a Society with Secrets.

The Masonic Fraternity is NOT Satanic in nature.

Suggest if you are interested in pursuing interest in the Masonic Fraternity if over the age of 18 you contact a man whom you know is a Mason for a petition and further information. If you are under the age of 18 suggest you contact a Mason for information on the DeMolay Organization.

If no local Masonic Lodge is available then suggest you contact the Grand Lodge of the State in which you reside.

She might have been an eastern star, Masons are something like a secret society, I am not sure. I know that it's very popular in the military, for militray personell to join, they have very odd rituals, at least the ones I have heard off, it's sorta like hazing but I am sure it differs from lodge to lodge. I know they have an own version of he Bible, & I know that a lot of presidents & Senators are affiliated with the Masonic Lodges as well. I know for a fact that in the military there was favorism for Masons & that they enjoyd certain perks over non mason soldiers...like I said it is different everywhere...the eastern stars are the female counter part to the masons & you can only becpome an eastern star if you are married to a mason or at least so I was told.

It is a not so secret society.

They are evolved from the Freemasons guild of old. They a basically a group of people who value free thinking and moral improvement of there members. They are not required to be of any religion but they must be religious.

How do you know she had one for sure? She is not suppose to open her mouth to no one about her affiliations, I don't even think a woman can claim it unless her husband was a high something or other. Look up the Freemasons. They have the power.
