In the late 60s, early 70s there was a futuristic *made for TV move* about an across-country race that originated in New York (?). The winner of the race became a *land owner* in/near a national park (Grand Canyon ?) because there was no more land available due to overpopulation.

It is not the popular Logan's Run movie where he is running to escape death.

it makes me think of 'Death Race 2000', although it wasn't a made for tv movie. Competitors race across the country, running down pedestrians to score points, although i don't remember it having to do with land ownership. Here's a link

It also sounds a bit like 'The Last Chase' (1981)...which wasn't a race, exactly, but the guy 'races' across the country...

But now you've piqued my curiousity, i hope someone answers this!

I remember a number of movies dealing with overpopulation, but most solved the problem by killing people off. This does sound familiar though, I will continue to look.

Almost sounds like a cross between Logan's search for Sanctuary and Far & Away search for land.
