After being a mechanic for many years and spending much of that time in Europe, here is my 2 cents. Stay away from the French cars. Not French bashing here, but they are a pain in the butt to repair and the bills get exspensive.
Check out the new VW Polo or Opel / Vauxhall. Some really nice cars, dependable and great on gas.
Want fantastic miles per gallon.. .Toyota Prius or other Hybrid

That is one of the ugliest cars i've ever seen. I would look at some of the new hondas they seem to get around 28 or more.
You might want to pick up a car and driver magazine it will have all the details you need. Also alot of the new hybrid cars say they get 40 to 60 MPG but they only get that high in premium situations.

i drive a peugeot 106 diesel and get about 60mpg pretty much regardless of driving style, my wife drives a clio 1.2 petrol and gets about 30mpg doing town driving. considering they're both the same size the difference is incredible. if you plan on doing more than about 12-15,000 miles a year the initial extra cost of buying a diesel will be recovered in the fuel savings. buy a cood car magazine like what car and in the back they give good reviews and mpg figures.

i get an average of 44mpg form my golf tdi. Much depends on the kind of travelling you do. if you are doing a fair amount of long distance journeys (20 miles per journey) then you are probably better of with a diesel. if you go to www.parkers.co.uk and click on reviews, then go to technical data, it will show you the average mileage consumption for the exact model of the picasso you are thinking of. For example, a picasso "1.6 HDi Desire (92bhp) 5d" will give you an average of 55mpg whilst a "2.0i 16V SX 5d Auto" will give you an average 32mpg - have a look at parkers for the model that you are thinking of. it is worth paying extra for the diesel as the engine is likely to last you longer and it will hold its re-sale value.

1.4 Renault 19.
120k on the clock. Will return around 45-50Mpg.
Depends on the sort of driving you do though. A lot of really small engine cars are fine for stop-start town driving but will be over-stressed (and return poor mpg) for motorway driving.

I'd get a motoring mag, they usually have tables in the back showing this sort of thing. And take the quoted figure with a pinch of salt.
