Well last night I had a meeting with my sons art teacher and he couldn't give me a clear explanation about his grade. I asked him if my son was disruptive in his class, he said no, I asked him if my son finished his work and turned it in, he said yes, then why the F, couldn't give me a response. I also heard throughout the school that he failed many students. I am taking this to the principle and possibly to the school district. I don't know what this art teachers expectations are from my kid.

Creativity should never be graded!

It sounds like the art teacher needs to clarify his/her expectations of performance and assignments in order to justify an "F" in art!
I would ask for a detailed explanation of all assignments, what the criteria was for each assignment, and whether or not all of your child's assignments were turned in on time. A grading rubric or course syllabus would help clarify those issues.

Like all teachers, art teachers have objectives that guide their lessons. Also, they don't just hand a student some paint and let them create; there' specific objectives for students to reach to show they've mastered the material being taught.

For example, a lesson on impressionist art might have students understand what makes a painting impressionist or not, how to paint using that style, some famous artists, etc. If a student sits through the lessons on impressionism and cannot explain anything about it, cannot paint it, and doesn't know any artists in that style, then that student deserves an F.

Art classes are much more than just being creative or trying the best you can. If you fail to meet the objectives of the lessons, then you deserve the F. Sorry, but it's true.

Grades for art classes are pretty much based on effort, time put into a piece, if you are always prepared and present during classes, etc. If you have no effort, are constantly late or absent, come to class with no materials and it is evident you put no time or effort into your pieces, it is easy to get an f.

they can tell who is really putting forth an effort to express themselves. If the kid is showing up late or skipping classes, not completing assignments on time etc.. then they will get a low grade

There are too many people who think that art isn't a serious pursuit worthy of their time. They are the ones who get an F in art.
