NO NO NO for gods sake NO!!!

Do not use castor oil, it will give you severe cramps and can hurt the BABY!! Why are you trying to induce b4 40 weeks? Are you kidding me? This is so dangerous. Please for your sake, stop

Hard to say. Castor oil doesn't always work. I am so tempted to try it (i'm 4 days away from my due date) but I'm scared to try it. I've heard it can cause the baby to have a bowel movement and that it can be painful and yucky and not bring on labor at all! I have heard of some people going into labor within hours of the castor oil taking effect and some women not going into labor for like 24 hours. Good luck with that though!!

That is too funny! I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first was FINALLY born after 42 weeks... talk about miserable!
All of my life, I have heard castor oil can cure anything. However, I doubt that it really works in pregnancy. Walking IS very helpful, but more as a stress relief to mommy. I have come to the reality that a child will be born when he/she is ready to make their appearance. But, if you like to take more proactive steps, try a few of these things (some can be sort of fun...):
1.) have sex (if your doctor has not told you to stop)
2.) find the bumpiest road in your area and drive over it repeatedly
3.) talk to you belly and promise the baby a pony, an X-Box 360, whatever you think you must, if he/she will just come on out!
Best of luck with the remainder of your pregnancy and labor. Children are the most wonderful thing that can happen to you! God bless...

Please do not take anymore.. It is just a myth that it WILL start labor, especially if there are no previous signs of labor starting.

It can dehydrate you, cause severe cramping, Diarrhea and remember.. everything you take, the baby also takes. It can cause the same problems with your baby and can even cause the baby to be born with Meconium. There is enough chance of that happening without the castor oil and it isn't fun to go through.
(my daughter was covered in meconium...without castor oil) and it is a major problem. I had extra nurses, NICU, peds, my Dr, and a neurologist in the delivery room with me to make sure everything was ok.

Skip all the wives tales and just wait for your baby to come when he/she is ready. You are otherwise risking the baby's health.

Congrats, and Good Luck!

You should have never taken castor oil. Just keep doing the long walks, and that will give you an easy labor! Best Wishes go out to you!

The castor oil trick is an old wives tale. It causes cramps because it gives you diarrhea, not labor cramps. Also, it's "feel" not "fill". You're only 39 weeks, have some patience. If you want to go early so bad, why didn't you get induced?

Do NOT use castor oil. If it works...it works by upsetting your stomach and that intestinal cramps can sometimes make labor start. But the castor oil ALSO upsets the baby and the baby can pass the meconium into the fluid and may breath the poop in and cause medical complications.

Castor oil, long walks, warm baths, spicy foods, etc, etc, etc. I tried it ALL... They're just old wives tales and none are really reliable. Plus, be careful taking castor oil - it can give you bad diarrhea if you're not careful, which can dehydrate you. I tried all these things and was still 2 weeks overdue - and I started all these attempts around 39 weeks. So just relax and let nature take it's course.

Good god, why?

"You might be surprised how the idea of a 40-week pregnancy came into being. In the early 1800s a German obstetrician simply declared that pregnancy lasts ten moon months counting from the start of the menstrual cycle prior to the pregnancy. (2) It took nearly 200 years for researchers to investigate whether this was, in fact, true. It turns out that it wasn't. When researchers in the late 1980s followed a group of healthy, white women with regular menstrual cycles, they discovered that pregnancy in first-time mothers averaged eight days longer than this, or forty-one weeks plus one day..."
