What type of wood is suggested? I know the dimensions, but I don't want it to weather rot in 1 year like the standard tables do. I saw one years ago in Yosemite that was coated very shiny.

Standard ping pong tables are made from chipboard, which is inexpensive and lightweight. If you leave it outside it will rot very quickly.

I have thought about it myself for a few months now, as I have no room inside to put a ping pong table, and I have put that project on hold for now, until i get a bigger house. =)

Sorry but I don't know what kind of wood can be used outside and still have the same physics as the chipboard.

Couldn't you use any thin wood, like masonite, and coat it with an outdoor sealer?
