my 2nd child, freaks out when i change his soiled diaper [#2] and spends the next 30 mins trying to retrieve it from the garbage can [crying hysterically the whole time]. i try to distract him, reason with him [tough at this age] and nothing seems to work....i have no experience with this kind of thing and am wondering if its unusual? and what to do to end it? please

in response: he is 1 and a half yrs old. he does do his business on the potty randomly but mostly #1. he has thus far not had an issue about flushing it away but i am concerned that this issue might progress there and i really dont want it to interfere with potty training...i am doing my best to encourage him to use the potty and to avoid the diapers all together, so far not much luck

There are book out there like " Everyone Poops " that might help him.
Make a diaper ritual. Say good bye to the old diaper and the poop and welcome the new clean diaper.
Is this child ready for a potty chair ?You didn't mention age ?
Maybe just have one ready.

How old is he? If he is over 2, you may be able to simply explain what is in his diaper and where it came from. Like when you eat your food your body keeps all the good stuff to help you grow and the rest comes out as "poo poo". When you drink, it's the same but it comes out as "pee pee". If you leave it in your diaper for too long, it can make you sick or give you a boo-boo.

I have 4 little boys and the oldest 2 were always curious, so I would explain stuff like that to them all the time. Maybe if he understands what is happening, he will understand why you need to change him and throw the dirty diaper away.

I have heard of this before! It is a form of separation anxiety with their poop!

Very funny really, but they see their poop as a part of themselves and when you throw it away, they actually feel a sort of rejection of themselves!

Try talking to him and preparing him for what you are going to do with the poop before you change him. Then start a sort of ceremony for the disposal of the "poop" for a while.

Show him that you respect his feelings and include him in the disposal of the diapers. Maybe you create a "special" receptical for the poop diapers that you can later empty when he goes to bed!

Good luck to you!

Sounds like a phase he's going through.
This is going to sound a little silly, but is he going through separation-anxiety? Does he he fuss when he has to separate with you or toys or anything? Or is it just the dirty diapers?
I'm a first-time-mom with my first baby due in March, but I would say that this sounds like a normal phase that will end pretty soon.
