"Since 1999 the park has bred its male lion and female tiger many times, producing about 24 cubs. "For the most part they're really laid back," said Jason Hutcherson, vice president of Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain, Georgia. They like to swim and play in the water. The drive-through wildlife park is believed to have the country's largest concentration of ligers, housing ten of the massive cats."
So, they have been around for a while. They don't happen in nature by themselves, since lions and tigers exist in different areas normally.

Ever since there have been tigers and lions. There have been cases of Asiatic lions breeding with tigers in the wild and producing offspring. Ligers (and, rarer, tigons) exist in zoos around the world. Look it up "Liger" on Wikipedia.org

Down through history, and very occasionally, animals fitting the description of ligers have been sighted in the forests of India and these rumours have persisted for over 1,000 years. Despite this, a liger has never been officially documented in the wild and unless that happens they will remain a creature of myth.

"It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic."
