I am trying to save all of my files from my computer (from My Computer down to the very last bit), so that I can install a new version of my computer. I have Windows 98 since I can't afford much more, but I believe it will make it faster and easier to work with if I install the new version of it. I can't seem to save file folders and such on a floppy disk without it not working. (i.e.- I saved a file called PeachTree and it said that I didn't have the right connection with it or something) Should I use something other than floppy disks? If not, please tell me what I should to save all of my computer files so I can convert it onto the new version without deleting anything important I've saved on the previous computer. Thank you so much.

Go to Walmart and buy a thumb drive (flash drive, jump drive) for around $20. Save all of your files on it. When you plug it into the USB port on your computer you will see it listed under "My Computer."

You've given very sketchy and unrecognizable information in your question, so I'll just try to give you a general answer.

First, if you have 2 computers why not get a crossover cable and transfer the files like that? Or, just install your primary drive into the new computer as a slave and access the files as needed?

Second, program files can be transferred to a new computer but that doesn't mean they will run. Programs like Peachtree accounting and others have to be INSTALLED from a source cd.

Lastly, if you are intending to install and upgrade OS, then you should only save your data files, pics, vids, music, etc. You can do that by writing them to cds or dvds.

Hope this helps. Good Luck

It depends on what you mean by "file". There are program files and there are data files Program files being applications like Word, WordPerfect, Visio, etc. Data files being documents, spreadsheets, etc. My guess based on the info provided PeachTree is a program file. Most program files must be reinstalled to work properly. A simple copy will not do. For data files created by Peach Tree, you should be able to make a copy of them and access them again through Peach Tree once you have installed it properly. Many programs may also have an inherent utility to do a backup of the data files created. Check your on-line help for your applications. I hope this helps.

you can burn all your DATA files (not programs) to CD's or if you have an external HardDrive you can copy those files on that drive thru a USB or FireWire cable.
