If you have a broadband connection or DSL, it is hugely cheaper as compared to traditional phone lines. For example, I pay (including taxes), about $17 per month ($208 per year), for unlimited calling anywhere in USA and Canada. The most expensive service I know of (for home service) costs $31 per month (including all taxes) for unlimited calling, but you can pay monthly, instead of for a year in advance. There are also cheaper plans available, if you don't want unlimited calling. The downside of VOIP calling? It is dependant upon your broadband/DSL connection, so if that connection does not work, your phone will not work either. The quality of sound is sometimes not as good as that of a traditional land line, but the difference is actually not that much - you usually have to be carefully searching for faults. And definitely not for the price difference.

I work from home and had a huge bill for long distance. I couldn't use many of the unlimited LD services because they only allow that for residential use. I currently use Vonage and I love it. The business version is only around $50-$60 a month. This is great as opposed to a $200-300 long-distance bill. The resididental version is only $30 a month. It works very well as long as you have a good broad-band internet service.

Because most people already have internet and the cost for Voice over IP service is cheaper than normal phone service. Plus, you typically do get long distance for free.
