I have a learning disability and grew up in the 70's. They put everyone in the class that they did not know how to deal with. My teachers always made a big deal when it was time to go to the resource center. My parents sent me to private school for 7-12 grade. I hope that things are better today.

Depending on the severity of the disability, back in the 50's a schoolmight not allow a student to attend. Some areas had special schools (which were little more than asylums) for people with disabilities. By the 70's and 80's they had the "short bus" and everyone in school knew the funny kids who rode that bus then went to the resource room all day and they never saw them otherwise, never played with them, and didnt know their names. Things have acome a long way since then but there are still many people out there with old fashioned attitudes and ideas. LD is a real, documented condition and children with any sort of learning disabilities are supported by Federal LAw called IDEA. They are entitled to access to the same curriculum as all other students. If the school is denying the existence of your conditionand your family feels that they are in error you have the right to an independent evaluation. There are wonderful resources about IDEA,learning disabilities and wrights law on the internet. You and your folks should get all the info you can.

My father grew up in with a hearing loss and possibly ADD in the fifties and sixties. He often got in trouble, and no modifications were made. In fact, nobody even mentioned the possiblity that there was a problem. While he never went to college, he had a very successful career in the Navy, earning the highest rank of an enlisted man, and after retiring, began a new career. Fortunately, even though he had a disability that affected his ability to be successful in school, he was able to adapt to the 'real world' and has not had any major problems. This is not always the case though, as other posts have shown.

Most kids with learning disabilities are more than capable of going to college. Unfortunately the trend seems to be that they don't care, have little to no work ethic, and expect the world to be handed to them. I work in Special Education and have students with severe retardation or other disabilities, and they work harder than the students with minor learning disabilities.
My grandmother was a person with a learning disability and when she was failing every subject in Middle School, the principal, teachers, and her parents got together and decided she should drop out of school and get a job instead of continuing to struggle.

The people 50 years ago are now in jail. I tought in a private Sp.Ed. school and yes LD is real. If you are having problems talk to you Sp.Ed teachers, make sure that you are upto date with the laws, I.D.E.A and A.D.A there are others, make sure that you have a diagnostic exam for your LD, once you have these there are laws that will protect you, the best thing that you can do to help you graduate is work as hard as you can. Don't be afraid to work hard, my wife is still in Sp.Ed. and that is the main reason why her kids will fail.
I don't know your age or anything so be sure to advocate and not take a no answer. There are a lot of schools and colleges that work with LD people, most of the students that I worked with went to community colleges.
Good Luck.
