I thought that maybe we would finally start getting some place with democrats now in power. pfft.
Iraq of course is still a joke and the rich still won't do anything for the working class. They get raise after raise but increase minimum wage, heck no.

well a couple of things to add. First Nancy I have an education. And to those that don't want an increase in min. wage that it will be a negative thing, you are the ones that need to wake up. I see people struggle everyday, not every has been blessed with a silver spoon in their mouth or the ability to attend college. If not for those who are working minimum wage where would serve you lunch. Everyone should be able to make a decent wage.

The Republicans are fillibustering the bill.
And why the thumbs down? It's a fact, not an opinion.

Do understand that only 2 or 4% of all workers are minimum wage (i forget the exact number, but it is within this range). So increasing that wage will only affect a small amount of people. You also have to think about this, those in a minimum wage position are there for a reason. It is vastly unskilled labor at chain stores. Do those people need over a 1$ hr raise for serving me lunch?
You are right though, the rich wil get rich, and the poor wil stay poor. It has happened through history and will continue until something radical happens, and neither Democrats or Republicans will be that radical change.

That's because Republicans actually stayed awake in Econ 101, unlike their Democrat classmates.
Forcing small businesses to pay more for a worker whose skill set and relative worth to the company have not increased is ludicrous and counter-productive.
Small businesses are the backbone of America. They employ the majority of Americans. Unfortunately, they're not in a position to simply pass the additional cost along to the final consumer. If I own and operate a local hardware store and try to raise the price of a gallon of paint by $1/gallon, my customers will simply travel a mile up the street to Wal Mart. If you raise the cost of my labor force by 41% (the proposed increase in the minimum wage), I will have to employ 41% fewer people. Guess who is affected most by those cuts? That's right: the same people you're purporting to "help".
If I were a person earning minimum wage, I'd wonder if my job would still be there after my "raise".

It takes time to get this type of legislation through. It has passed the house and is now in the senate and then it has to go to the president to be signed and this is where it might not make it. A veto is probably what will be done and maybe or maybe not they will have enough votes to overturn this veto, so the increase in minimum wage is still a long way from becoming reality. Write to your congressmen and tell them how you feel about this bill is a way of swaying enough votes to overturn any veto.

The Senate vote to approve was yes from all 50 Democrats and 4 Republicans, but it needs 60 to pass . Republicans want to hang some tax cuts for Businesses on it and bring it back to the floor. Send letters to senators that opposed the clean version asking that it be kept clean and passed.

Theres enough checks and balances int the gov, it's hard for anything to happen if there is no harmony and compromise.
But on the Democrats behalf, the newly elected officials have only been in power less than a month. It may take a little time to completely changed tons of flawed policies. It may be little or no change, but i think it's a little early to make judgement in a single month.
__________
did someone on this thread say halleluia to NOT raising the minimum wage. How can anybody on earth possibly oppose that. "screw people that work, i dont want them to be able to pay their bills. I dont care about anyone, i'm souless and hellbound"

Move to a new state as most states do not follow the federal minimum wage. My state, Ohio just raised ours even before this debate went into congress. And its the republicans who are stopping its process...not the Democratcs. Republicans are business owners....they don't want to dish out more money to the workers.....where Democrats are the workers and they want more money for the workers.
Plus this is Government.....NOTHING in government is every instant, fast or right away. If something is mentioned today and its actually in law 1 year later.....that is SUPER FAST.

The democrates are being blocked by the Republicans snd the President but at least now we can stop the Republicans.
At some point, they will have to give something in order to get.
something. That is called checks and balances. Those were smart men that set our our form of Government.

why would you want an increase in the minimium wage???
it would just mean few jobs overall, slowed job growth, and even fewer well paying jobs, as the funds to pay the minimium wage workers increased wage has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is usually off of the increases that better paid individuals would receive.
if you are making above the 'new' minimium wage, you are not entitled to an increase just because the minimium goes up.
democrats, republicans, all professional politicians are the same. they look out for themselves and those who give them money.
