We hung our new bird feeder on a ceiling hook on our back deck, however we haven't seen any birds come to it yet. I tried resting the bird feeder on the ledge of our deck but no dice. The only tree we have on our property is a small tree in the front yard, but I would love to keep the bird feeder in the backyard. How can I get birds to come to it?

Since you say you have no tree with branches close to where you want to enjoy the birds, hang your feeders on the feeder poles they sell at Wal Mart, or Home Depo. They can have up to 4 prongs on them, and you can hang two or three different feeders for different birds, and save one for a bath/waterer that you can buy to hang close by food. I have several in my yard, and different birds are here now that it's winter than were here in spring and summer. I even hung a globe with nectar for hummingbirds. The first place I hung it, none ever came. I gave it a try later in the season, and in a different place, and viola! We had hummingbirds right in our kitchen window! I hung the globe on one of those window hooks, and we could wash dishes and watch them fight for nectar rights not 2 feet away! And if we opened the window, we could hear their wings.. it sounds like a big bee closeby, and their 'song' is a squeak of sorts. Just keep offering different kinds of foods for the birds in your area, and you might want to invest in an inexpensive bird book, so you can identify all the birds that will find your feeders! I have seen 19 species in my yard, not 5 feet from my car port where I have a rocker where I sit and watch them.
You might also keep in mind that you will get free growth from the seed at the feeders. I put my feeders in my front flower bed the first time, and ended up with all kinds of stuff growing! I had some of the prettiest sunflowers in my yard from free growth out of the feeders. So put them where you can just mow down any unwanted growth from your seed scatter, and enjoy!

The deck is not really a good spot because of people always being around it and the movement but if you want it in the back yard I would get a Pole and use a rod with a hook on the end and place it about 20 feet from you deck and then to try to attract some birds throw out bread crumbs or some thing like that around it

Birds need a place to perch and escape. If really want to keep it in the back I suggest you get a large Branch with lots of small branches on it from a tree somewhere and mount it to your deck. Hang the bird feeder from this. This will give them a feeling of safety. Also offer different types of foods like a suet cake. This attracts all types of birds. Also some birds like Juncos are ground feeders. Place a dish on your patio with seed.

I have some of my feeders place on iron plant hangers and it works well. You might consider placing your feeder were you can enjoy the birds feeding from inside your house maybe in front of a window or so. Good Luck once your birds find the food, they'll love you so much!!!!!

Well !! Its been a mild winter this year and their are plenty of other natural food sources still in the gardens ie. berries on trees and insects still hatching. So the birds are'nt looking for as much food. But maybe the current cold snap might wipe those natural food sources out and the birds will be tempted with your feeders !!! It might not be your location !!!

My husband dug a hole and put our feeder on a post in the center of the yard. Do you have cats or dogs that could be a problem?, if so, then put a metal collar around the post about 12" long so the cat can't climb past the metal. It works for us.

I would place it away from the house a short distance, and high enough that dogs and cats can't reach it,you might want to put it on a post if you don't have a tree you can hang it in...

Put it on a pole in your yard, not on the deck because the birds may be scared of people.
