Not even close. I'd say Johnny Lang is a much better player than him, but still not in the same league as Clapton in his Yardbirds/Cream/Blind Faith days.

As an old time Clapton fan(and part time guitar teacher, I'm an engineer), I'd like to add my 2 cents- once you reach a certain level of playing, arguing over 'who's the best' or 'who's the next....' gets irrelevant.
John Mayer, Eric C. Jimi Hendrix, SRV- I"m really convinced that the only way to determine the next EC is to let Eric himself decide....
BTW- John Mayer IS nothing short of amazing....

As someone who has followed Eric Clapton's career from the beginning, NO John Mayer is not the next Eric Clapton. I like him a lot and think he is quite talented but I haven't heard the next Eric Clapton yet.

Mayer's O.K., but Stevie Ray Vaughn is the only guitarist who even came close to Clapton. Eric once said he treats every show as if it's his last. Stevie Ray is the only other guitarist who brought that kind of passion to his playing.

john mayer IS an amazing guitarist however, he is just copin' licks. his stlye (atleast when he plays blues) is a direct copy of SRV. clapton, SRV, hendrix they all had their own styles! john mayer lacks that....but with time he will find it i'm sure. as far as johnny lang and even kenny wayne go, they have it.....while there are only so many blues licks its all in your tone, delivery and your feel!
